Vikram Seth: The Golden Gate, A Suitable Boy and Exam Traps

Two Indian novelists called Vikram, both educated abroad, both best known for a very long book. In the August 2024 UGC NET evening paper, List II of a matching question put Vikram Chandra and Vikram Seth one line apart, and the whole question turned on keeping them separate. Seth wrote The Golden Gate. Chandra wrote Love and Longing in Bombay. If you mix them up, you lose the mark even if you know every other pair.

So this guide starts with a simple rule and builds from there: Seth is the one who writes in verse and travels; Chandra is the one who writes about Bombay and crime. Everything below is about Seth.

Quick answer: Vikram Seth (born 20 June 1952, Calcutta) is an Indian poet, novelist and travel writer. Exams ask about three books above all: The Golden Gate (1986), a novel in 590 Onegin stanzas set in San Francisco; A Suitable Boy (1993), set in Brahmpur in 1951–52; and From Heaven Lake (1983), a travel book about crossing from China to India through Sinkiang and Tibet.

Born: 20 June 1952, Calcutta (now Kolkata)

Education: The Doon School; Tonbridge School; PPE at Corpus Christi College, Oxford; economics PhD at Stanford (not completed); student years in Nanjing, China

Writes: novels, a verse novel, poetry, travel writing, a libretto, a family memoir, translations from Chinese

Best-known works: The Golden Gate (1986), A Suitable Boy (1993), An Equal Music (1999)

Big awards: Sahitya Akademi Award 1988 (The Golden Gate); Commonwealth Writers’ Prize 1994 (A Suitable Boy); Padma Shri 2007

Asked in: UGC NET, State SET, GATE, KVS and State PGT/TGT, Assistant Professor exams

Why examiners keep coming back to Seth

Seth is a gift to a question setter because almost every book he wrote is a different genre. A single name can anchor a question about the verse novel, the travel book, the campus-to-Calcutta family saga, the music novel or the memoir. That makes him perfect for “identify the genre” and “match the work” items, and those are exactly the two shapes the site’s previous year questions show.

The second reason is his place in Indian Writing in English. He came through in the 1980s, the decade of Midnight’s Children, Amitav Ghosh’s first novel and Upamanyu Chatterjee’s English, August, but he went the other way on style. Where Rushdie bent English into something new, Seth wrote clean, classical, almost Victorian prose and strict metrical verse. Examiners like that contrast, and so should you: it explains why A Suitable Boy is often compared to Tolstoy, Austen and George Eliot rather than to Midnight’s Children.

My advice on priorities: learn The Golden Gate and From Heaven Lake cold, because they appear in real papers. Learn the four families and Lata’s three suitors in A Suitable Boy. Know An Equal Music and Two Lives in one line each. The children’s books and libretto are low priority.

Note the pattern: the first three books (poems, travel, poems) all came before the first novel, and the first novel was itself in verse. Seth was a poet before he was a novelist, and many students get that order wrong.

Book-by-book notes: what the exam actually asks

From Heaven Lake (1983)

A travel book, not a novel and not a poem. The young Seth, a student in Nanjing, hitchhikes home to Delhi in 1981 through Sinkiang (Xinjiang), Tibet and Nepal. Heaven Lake is in Xinjiang. The book won the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award. Two separate site questions test only one thing about it: its genre. If an option says “travel book” or “travelogue”, that is your answer.

The Golden Gate (1986)

The book every Seth question seems to circle back to. It is a novel told in 590 fourteen-line Onegin stanzas in iambic tetrameter, using the rhyme scheme of Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin (aBaBccDDeFFeGG). Seth was inspired by Charles Johnston’s English translation of Pushkin. Even the acknowledgements and the author’s note are written in the same stanza.

Setting: San Francisco in the early 1980s, among young professionals. John Brown, a lonely young professional in Silicon Valley’s tech world, is set up through a personal advertisement placed by his former lover Janet Hayakawa. The ad is answered by Liz Dorati, a lawyer. John and Liz live together until the relationship breaks down; Liz then marries Phil Weiss and they have a son. Janet later dies in a car crash. The book ends with John invited to be godfather to Liz’s child.

Exam detail to remember: it won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1988. Do not call it a “long poem” or an “epic” when the option “novel in verse” is available.

A Suitable Boy (1993)

One of the longest single-volume novels in English: 1,349 pages in hardback. Set in 1951–52 in the fictional town of Brahmpur on the Ganges, with episodes in Calcutta, Delhi and the countryside. The plot that holds it together is simple: Mrs Rupa Mehra wants to find a suitable husband for her younger daughter, Lata.

Lata has three suitors: Kabir Durrani (a Muslim cricketer and fellow student, her real love), Amit Chatterji (a poet from an Anglicised Calcutta family) and Haresh Khanna (a practical shoe-company man). She marries Haresh. The four families are the Mehras, Kapoors, Khans and Chatterjis. Around the marriage plot sit the politics of the 1952 election, the abolition of zamindari, Hindu–Muslim tension and Maan Kapoor’s love for the singer Saeeda Bai.

It won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize (Best Book) and the WH Smith Literary Award, both in 1994.

An Equal Music (1999)

A London novel about Western classical music. Michael, a violinist in a string quartet, meets again Julia, the pianist he loved as a student in Vienna. She is now married with a child, and she is going deaf. One line is enough for most exams: violinist, deaf pianist, Vienna, Schubert and Beethoven.

Two Lives (2005)

Non-fiction. The lives of Seth’s great-uncle Shanti Behari Seth, an Indian dentist who trained in Berlin, and his German-Jewish wife Henny, set against the Second World War. If a question asks which Seth book is a memoir or biography, this is it.

The poetry

Mappings (1980), The Humble Administrator’s Garden (1985, named after a garden in Suzhou, China), All You Who Sleep Tonight (1990) and Summer Requiem (2015). The verse is formal: rhyme, regular metre, short lyrics. The Humble Administrator’s Garden won the Commonwealth Poetry Prize (Asia). Students sometimes read “The Frog and the Nightingale” at school; it comes from Beastly Tales from Here and There.

Prizes and firsts

Award questions on Indian English writers usually ask “which book won which prize”. Seth’s list is long, but only the first four rows below are worth memorising.

1983Thomas Cook Travel Book AwardFrom Heaven Lake
1985Commonwealth Poetry Prize (Asia)The Humble Administrator’s Garden

Firsts worth knowing: The Golden Gate is the best-known novel in English written entirely in Onegin stanzas. A Suitable Boy is regularly listed among the longest single-volume novels in English. And one family first: Seth’s mother, Leila Seth, was the first woman judge of the Delhi High Court and the first woman to become Chief Justice of a state High Court in India. From 2006 Seth himself became a public face of the campaign against Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.

Not a Booker: A Suitable Boy was not shortlisted for the Booker Prize. If an option pairs Seth with the Booker, treat it with suspicion.

Adaptations and influence

Television. A Suitable Boy became a six-part BBC One series in 2020, directed by Mira Nair and written by Andrew Davies, with Tanya Maniktala as Lata, Ishaan Khatter as Maan, and Tabu as Saeeda Bai. If an exam asks about recent adaptations of Indian English novels, this is the one to quote.

Music. Seth wrote the libretto Arion and the Dolphin (1994) for an opera by Alec Roth, and later collaborated with Roth again on the pieces collected in The Rivered Earth. An Equal Music grows out of the same love of Western classical music.

The verse-novel revival. The Golden Gate showed that a long, funny, modern story could be told in strict rhymed stanzas and still sell. It brought Pushkin’s stanza back to a whole generation of English readers.

The sequel that has not appeared. A follow-up, A Suitable Girl, was announced in 2009 and has still not been published. Do not choose it as an option for a published Seth novel.

Asked in exams: real questions from this site

Every question below is taken from a previous year question page on Limitless Literature. Four test Seth directly; three use him as a distractor, which is just as common.

Question (short)AnswerSource
Match The Golden Gate with its author (List II also has Vikram Chandra, R. Raj Rao, Mahesh Dattani)Vikram Seth (key: A-II, B-IV, C-I, D-III)UGC NET August 2024, evening shift, Q55

Two lessons from this table. First, From Heaven Lake has been asked twice, both times for its genre or its author. Second, when Seth is a distractor, the right answer is usually another Indian English writer of the same generation, so read the work in the question stem slowly. For more practice, use the full Indian literature previous year questions, the topic-wise PYQ collection and the complete previous year papers.

Exam traps and the correct answers

  1. Seth or Chandra? The Golden Gate, A Suitable Boy, From Heaven Lake and An Equal Music are Seth. Red Earth and Pouring Rain, Love and Longing in Bombay and Sacred Games are Vikram Chandra.
  2. “From Heaven Lake is a novel.” Wrong. It is a travel book. The verse novel is The Golden Gate.
  3. “The Golden Gate is set in India.” Wrong. It is set in San Francisco, among Americans, which is part of why examiners like it.
  4. “The Golden Gate uses sonnets in iambic pentameter.” Wrong on the metre. The stanzas are fourteen lines, but the line is iambic tetrameter, following Pushkin’s Onegin stanza.
  5. “Lata marries Kabir.” Wrong. Kabir is the man she loves; she chooses Haresh Khanna.
  6. “A Suitable Girl came out as the sequel.” Wrong. It was announced but remains unpublished.

More Indian English novelists to study next

Seth makes most sense next to his contemporaries. Read the Amitav Ghosh guide for the other big 1980s debut, the Arundhati Roy guide for the 1990s Booker novel students often set against A Suitable Boy, and the Anita Desai guide for the older generation.
